TORONTO — The United Kingdom’s new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is now in effect, requiring Canadians and other nationalities to obtain one for short stays.
As previously reported by Travelweek, the updated entry requirements came into effect on Feb. 25, 2026, and apply to visitors from 85 countries, including Canada. Under the updated rules, these visitors will be required to pay a £16 fee to obtain the ETA, which allows them to stay in the U.K. for up to six months. It is valid for either two years or until their passport expires, whichever comes first, and can be used multiple times.
Eligible visitors who do not have a valid ETA will be denied boarding and will not be permitted to travel to the U.K.
Air Canada has also updated its website to alert travellers of the new requirement, noting that the ETA does not guarantee entry to the U.K. but gives permission to travel to the destination. The airline also notes that travellers are also recommended to apply for the ETA online at least three days before departure.
A decision is typically made within minutes, however it can take up to three working days. Applicants will receive a confirmation email from U.K. Visas and Immigration (UKVI). If approved, the ETA will be linked to their passport.
