Strong North American growth pushes Mexico past 16 million visitors

MEXICO CITY — Mexico saw strong international momentum in 2025, welcoming 16.5 million visitors by air from January to October, according to new figures released by Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora.

The updated data, sourced from the Ministry of the Interior’s Migration Policy Unit, shows Mexico registered 16,571,000 international air arrivals in the first 10 months of the year, nearly 100,000 more than the same period in 2024 and 10.2% higher than 2019 levels. Travellers from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom led overall arrivals.

“These results confirm that Mexico is a reliable destination for the millions of people who visit us each year,” Rodríguez Zamora said. “Families, young travelers and older adults continue to come because they find in our country a destination full of hospitality, infrastructure and experiences that inspire peace of mind and enjoyment.”

The United States remained Mexico’s top source market, contributing 11.157 million visitors between January and October. This was 62,000 more than in 2024 and 26.7% higher than in 2019.

Canada delivered another strong year with 2,079,000 visitors, representing 11.4% growth over last year and an 18.1% increase over pre-pandemic travel. The United Kingdom followed with 372,061 visitors, up 3.2% year over year.

Travel to Mexico also grew from several overseas markets outside North America and the U.K. Visitor arrivals climbed 14.8% from Italy, 14.3% from Argentina, 11.6% from South Korea and 10.6% from China. Combined arrivals from these and other international markets reached 2,963,000 visitors during the 10-month period.

Rodríguez Zamora noted that the country’s tourism performance is supported by strong policy efforts to broaden Mexico’s global appeal and drive continued growth. “We will continue strengthening policies that support the arrival of more tourists to destinations across the country, because Mexico has it all: landscapes, diverse activities and enormous potential for growth,” she said. “Tourism is a powerful tool to create opportunities, identity and shared prosperity.”

Travellers represented a wide range of demographics, underscoring Mexico’s cross-market appeal. Visitors aged 30-44 made up the largest segment at 29.2%, followed by travellers aged 45-59 at 24%. Those 60 and older accounted for 16.9%, while travellers aged 16-29 represented 18.4%. Children and adolescents comprised 11.5% of total arrivals. “The diversity of visitor profiles confirms that Mexico remains an attractive option for family travel, as well as for those seeking cultural, nature-based, leisure or adventure experiences,” Rodríguez Zamora said.
