Cross-border travel from Canada to U.S. down 35% by automobile, 20% by air

OTTAWA — Cross-border travel has taken another nosedive, according to Statistics Canadaʻs April 2025 numbers.

Once again Canadian-resident return trips from the U.S. by automobile showed the biggest decline, by 35.2%. Itʻs the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year declines.

Meanwhile Canadian-resident return trips from the U.S. by air dropped 19.9%, compared with the same month in 2024.

Canadian-resident return trips from overseas countries increased for the month (1.3 million; +9.9% from April 2024), however overall Canadian-resident return trips by air from abroad edged down 1.7%, pulled down by the 19.9% drop in Canadian return trips from the U.S.

Coming this direction, the number of arrivals to Canada by U.S. residents by air decreased 5.5% from the same month in 2024, while arrivals by automobile decreased 10.7%.

Overall non-resident arrivals to Canada by air totalled 632,600, down 1.2% year over year. This total includes arrivals by U.S. residents with the 5.5% drop, and arrivals by overseas residents (up 2.8%).
