AmaMagdalena, AmaWaterways' first river cruise ship on the Magdalena River

AmaWaterways debuts second luxury river cruise ship in Colombia

CALABASAS, CA — AmaWaterways has expanded its presence in Colombia with the launch of its second luxury river cruise ship, AmaMelodia, marking another milestone in the company’s development along the Magdalena River.

The Oct. 26 launch comes just months after the debut of AmaMagdalena, which made history as the first major river cruise ship to operate on this storied waterway. Together, the two ships signal AmaWaterways’ long-term investment in Colombia’s emerging river cruise industry and its commitment to sustainable tourism and cultural collaboration.

“After seeing the incredible response to AmaMagdalena earlier this year, we are thrilled to welcome AmaMelodia to the AmaWaterways fleet,” said Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways. “Launching these two ships has been an extraordinary collaboration with our Colombian partners. Together, we are not only creating unforgettable travel experiences for our guests but also helping to build a sustainable foundation for tourism that benefits local communities along the river.”

Accommodating just 64 guests, AmaMelodia was purpose-built to offer a high level of comfort while showcasing Colombia’s diverse landscapes and riverfront towns. Its staterooms, which range from 237 to 318 square feet, feature twin balconies for uninterrupted views of the Magdalena River. On board, guests enjoy Latin American cuisine and Western classics in the Main Restaurant, vibrant entertainment in the Main Lounge, and a whirlpool-equipped Sun Deck for scenic relaxation.

Guests can select from two seven-night itineraries – ‘Magic of Colombia’ and ‘Wonders of Colombia’ – each highlighting the biodiversity, cuisine, and history of the Magdalena River Valley. Shore excursions include private experiences such as a private performance of the Barranquilla Carnival, an exclusive jazz concert in Mompox, and a visit to Palenque, the first free town in the Americas.

“Seeing AmaMelodia set sail is very meaningful to me,” said Kristin Karst, Co-Founder and Chief Brand Ambassador of AmaWaterways. “Over the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with our Colombian partners and witnessing the incredible pride and passion that define this country. From its talented artisans to the warm communities along the riverbanks, Colombia’s spirit is woven into every detail of this ship. AmaMelodia is a celebration of that culture and a beautiful example of what can be achieved through true collaboration and respect for local heritage.”

AmaWaterways’ river cruise expansion in Colombia has been recognized by and developed in partnership with ProColombia, the country’s tourism promotion agency. Said Carmen Caballero, president of ProColombia: “The Magdalena River is a symbol of national identity and a hub for sustainable development. Seeing how river tourism is giving it new meaning, connecting travelers with our traditions, landscapes and communities, reflects the type of tourism we want to promote at ProColombia: responsible, inclusive, and transformative. Our role has been to coordinate national and regional actors with the tourism sector to facilitate the launch of this operation and maximize its positive impact on the territories.”
