“A dear friend, a trusted partner, and a true polar enthusiast:” Patrick Shaw

TORONTO — Patrick Shaw, a champion of polar expedition travel and a friend to many in the Canadian and U.S. travel industries, has passed away.

Pat was CEO of Polar Latitudes Expeditions, leading the company in its first months post-merger between Polar Latitudes and Albatros Expeditions. In spring 2025 the two companies announced their plans to merge, and Pat had served as CEO since September 2025, splitting his time between Toronto and Copenhagen.

Pat was already well-known to the Canadian travel industry and expedition cruising from his time with Quark Expeditions. He departed Quark as President and CEO in 2010, after nine years with the company.

A heartfelt tribute to Pat was shared by Polar Latitudes Expeditions.

“Pat was a dear friend, a trusted partner, and a true polar enthusiast who helped us shape Polar Latitudes Expeditions into the company it is today. His vision, leadership and spirit will remain a lasting part of who we are. Our deepest sympathies are with Pat’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Pat passed away while on expedition to Antarctica. Polar Latitudes Expeditions extended its sincere gratitude “to the medical staff who provided Pat with compassionate care, and to the Ushuaia community for the touching tribute at the pier.”

The company added that Pat’s leadership “was a cornerstone of our success, and he was a beloved part of the Polar Latitudes Expeditions’ family. At this time, our top priority is supporting Pat’s family, our team, and our partners as we navigate this loss. Please know that our incredible leadership team remains fully engaged and committed to ensuring continuity in our service and partnerships.

“We are grateful for your support as we honour Pat’s memory by continuing the work he was so passionate about.”
