LAPLAND, FINLAND — Winter is coming to Lapland, Finland, where a snow and ice hotel inspired by ‘Game of Thrones’ is burning up social media feeds.
Located in the resort of Kittilä about 90 minutes from Helsinki, SnowVillage uses 20 million kilos of snow and 350,000 kilos of natural ice, and changes each year in shape, size and design. This year, the winter wonderland’s Snow Hotel, which offers approximately 30 rooms, is entirely ‘Game of Thrones’ themed, with a life-sized iron throne with swords, a Braavosi Hall of Faces, and even a white walker with glowing blue eyes.
The SnowVillage also includes an Ice Restaurant and Ice Bar where guests can sample drinks served ‘on the rocks’, as well as an Ice Chapel where couples can tie the knot with furnishings made entirely of ice.
SnowVillage – Game of Thrones’ was created in cooperation with HBO Nordic. This marks the 17th time that SnowVillage has been rebuilt, with construction occurring each year in late October or early November when temperatures drop to -10 degrees celsius. Interior temperatures remain a comfortable -2 to -5 degrees (when wearing suitable winter clothing!), regardless of the outdoor temperature.
No sightings of Jon Snow yet but with décor as ‘cool’ as this, no one hardly seems to mind.
