WestJet’s evacuation flights help with wildfire emergency assistance

WINNIPEG — This week WestJet is operating unscheduled flights from Winnipeg to Hamilton to support authorities with evacuating communities affected by wildfires in northern Manitoba.

The relief assistance is helping to ensure the safety of those who are displaced, while reducing the strain on local resources and hotel capacity in Winnipeg and surrounding area, said WestJet.

As of June 4, more than 430 people have been temporarily relocated thanks to expedited operational planning by teams within WestJet and across the affected region.

WestJet said it is proud to work with its charitable partner, GlobalMedic, to fly emergency support into the region, in addition to supporting ongoing efforts by Canadian Red Cross, Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada and the City of Winnipeg whose expertise is essential in supporting the community through this critical time.

Other evacuee flight planning is also underway, and WestJet continues to closely monitor this developing situation.

WestJet said any passengers currently in the region should continue to follow the instructions of local authorities. Wildfires continue to burn in parts of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.
