Flair, WestJet add recovery flights following violence in Mexico’s Jalisco state

TORONTO — Canadian airlines continue to restore schedules and bring passengers home after two days of cartel-related violence in Mexico’s Jalisco state prompted flight cancellations and widespread disruption earlier this week.

Airlines temporarily suspended or cancelled select services to destinations including Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara as a precaution. With airports now open and operations resuming, carriers are prioritizing reaccommodation efforts while adding limited recovery capacity.

Flair Airlines confirmed that Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) are open and that the airline has created additional recovery flights to get passengers home. All booked passengers impacted by earlier cancellations have been contacted and offered space on the new flights:

  • Flight F8 9303 departing Puerto Vallarta (PVR) at 18:40 and arriving in Toronto (YYZ) at 00:25
  • Flight F8 2665 departing Guadalajara (GDL) at 13:10, arriving in Toronto (YYZ) at 18:50

The airline says it added YVR-PVR flights today, Feb. 25, but they have already been filled with passengers whose earlier flights were cancelled due to the situation in Mexico.

Flair noted that these additional recovery flights are also open to the public, subject to availability, at a time when many carriers are reporting limited remaining seats.

WestJet also issued an operational update on Feb. 24 at 12:19 p.m. MT, stating that its immediate priority is reaccommodating guests originally scheduled to return on Sunday, Feb. 22 and Monday, Feb. 23.

The airline said that because most carriers have limited or no available seats, it has added additional flights to accommodate affected guests. Any remaining seats will be made available for sale on WestJet’s website.

Air Canada has also added seats to its schedule to help passengers return home sooner as part of broader recovery efforts.
