Canada and Ghana sign first air transport agreement

OTTAWA — Canada has signed its first air transport agreement with Ghana, a move set to enhance connectivity, expand flight options, and create new opportunities for businesses and travellers alike.

The agreement grants airlines from both countries the ability to operate scheduled air services, with the flexibility to serve any points in Canada and Ghana. Canadian and Ghanaian airlines will be allowed up to 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 weekly all-cargo flights under the terms of the deal. These new rights take effect immediately, enabling airlines to launch services as soon as they are ready.

“Ghana is a growing market for Canada, and I am pleased to see this first agreement open the door to new opportunities for travellers and businesses in both countries. This agreement will connect more passengers and strengthen our cultural and commercial ties,” said the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Transport and Internal Trade.

The deal marks an important milestone in Canada’s efforts to expand international air transport links, reinforcing economic and trade connections with West Africa. In 2023, bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Ghana surpassed $380 million, with Canadian exports totalling $281 million and imports from Ghana reaching nearly $100 million.

Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, highlighted the broader economic benefits of the agreement: “The newly finalized Air Transport Agreement between Canada and Ghana represents a significant step forward for both nations. This agreement will enhance connectivity, promote tourism, and drive economic growth. For Canada, it provides critical support for our exporters, opening doors to the dynamic West African market and enabling Canadian businesses to meet global demand for their products. This partnership reinforces our commitment to expanding trade and fostering mutually beneficial relationships across the globe.”

This agreement is part of Canada’s ongoing efforts under its Blue Sky policy, which aims to promote sustainable competition and expand international air service agreements. Canada now has air transport agreements or arrangements covering more than 125 countries, further strengthening its position as a global trade and travel hub.
