TORONTO — At long last, economy airline passengers may finally be getting what they deserve – a good night’s sleep.

Air New Zealand has unveiled a groundbreaking new prototype of sleep pods called Economy Skynest. Designed with the input of more than 200 customers over the course of three years, the new sleep product comprises six full-length, lie-flat pods that also include a full-size pillow, sheets and blanket, ear plugs and a privacy curtain.

The airline is currently exploring other features such as a separate reading light, personal device USB outlet and a ventilation outlet.

The exact positioning of the Economy Skynest within the aircraft has yet to be confirmed, however it will be situated in the economy cabin. This will be welcome news for Economy passengers, especially those booked on Air New Zealand’s upcoming Auckland-New York service, which lasts up to 17 hours and 40 minutes one way.

“A clear pain point for economy travellers on long-haul flights is the inability to stretch out. The development of the Economy Skynest is a direct response to that challenge,” said Mike Tod, Air New Zealand’s Chief Marketing and Customer Officer.

The airline will make a final decision on whether to operate the Economy Skynest in 2021 after it has assessed the performance of its inaugural year of Auckland-New York operations.

Nikki Goodman, General Manager of Customer Experience, said customer and cabin crew feedback during its final phase of development has been outstanding.

“We see a future flying experience where an economy-class customer on long-haul flights would be able to book the Economy Skynest in addition to their economy seat, get some quality rest and arrive at their destination ready to go. This is a game changer on so many levels.”
