TORONTO — The Canadian Embassy in Cuba has confirmed the unexpected temporary closure of Cayo Largo del Sur airport.

In a series of tweets, the embassy announced that the airport is now closed, which according to Transat is due to a damaged runway. The estimated reopening date is Feb. 26.

Travel to/from the island has been disrupted so travellers are being advised to contact their tour agencies.

The embassy is encouraging travellers to call +53-7204-2516 or +53-7204-2517 for assistance.

The unexpected closure has left many airlines and tour operators scrambling to assist stranded travellers. Travelweek reached out to Transat, who said that it is working with the Cuban authorities to put in place a plan to bring clients home.

“Our clients will be transferred to the city of Batabanó onboard a ferry that can accommodate up to 300 passengers. From Batabanó, a coach will take them to the Havana airport. A Transat representative will accompany them throughout the journey,” said a Transat representative.

Sunwing also issued the following statement to Travelweek:

“Following the unexpected closure of Cayo Largo airport, our destination team has been working closely with the Ministry of Tourism to make the necessary arrangements so that our customers can return to Canada this coming Friday as planned. We have two flights impacted, one destined for Toronto and the other Montreal. We are in the processing of making arrangements for these customers accordingly.

“Cayo Largo is a remote destination in Cuba, normally accessible via air, and so it has been necessary to source a suitable boat charter. Customers will be transported by catamaran and onwards by road to Varadero, where they will be accommodated in an all-inclusive resort ahead of their return flight (as required). Our destination team is working hard to confirm the timings of these new arrangements and will be communicating these as soon as practicable to our customers. In the meantime, we will be offering our customers due to arrive in Cayo Largo this coming Friday alternate vacation options in Cuba.”
