Lufthansa forced to cancel 1,000+ flights as strike looms

BERLIN — Lufthansa’s contingency plan will be released today, aimed at covering as many flights as possible Nov. 7 and Nov. 8 under the threat of a two-day cabin crew strike.

As reported yesterday the union representing Lufthansa’s flight attendants has called on its members to wage a two-day strike Nov. 7 – 8, potentially impacting international as well as domestic flights for the airline.

According to reports Lufthansa is cancelling some 1,300 flights over the two day span. The airline says it will be able to operate 2,300 of 3,000 planned flights on Nov. 7, and 2,400 of those planned for Nov. 8. Some 180,000 passengers will be affected by the cancellations.

Lufthansa has said it “strongly condemns” the strike and pursued legal action to prevent it, however earlier today a Frankfurt court rejected its attempt to block the strike. Lufthansa said it would appeal.

“We would like to apologize to all affected passengers for the inconvenience. We are currently working at full speed on a special flight schedule for Thursday and Friday.”

Passengers whose flight has not yet been cancelled, but still want to change to another day or the train, can get free rebooking with the following stipulations …

. Passengers are booked on a Lufthansa flight to and from Frankfurt or Munich with departure on Nov. 7 or 8.

. Passenger’s ticket was issued on and before Nov. 4.

. Passengers can rebook their flight for the same route to a new date up to and including Nov. 15. Availability in the same class provided.

Passengers booked on domestic Lufthansa flights can get a free exchange of their flight route for a train ticket. Lufthansa says seat reservations are strongly recommended.

Lufthansa says updates will be posted at the webpage as they become available.
