Take a number, IAG: Norwegian says it has more suitors

NEW YORK — Low-cost carrier Norwegian Air says it has received a number of acquisition inquiries from interested airline groups in the weeks after British Airways parent IAG indicated it was considering making a bid for the upstart airline.

Norwegian Air CEO Bjorn Klos, speaking to Bloomberg news service, said the carrier was in very preliminary talks with “very serious, professional” airline groups. Though he’s been known to spurn any takeover talks, Klos added: “There’s a saying that if the price is right, everything is for sale.”

Earlier this month British Airways parent company IAG announced it had acquired 4.61% of Norwegian Air Shuttle “to establish a position from which to initiate discussions, including the possibility of a full offer for Norwegian.” IAG already operates LEVEL, a low-cost carrier out of Spain. With LEVEL’s launch IAG now has five main airline brands, including Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia and Vueling.

Not surprisingly, word that other airline groups might be interested in buying Norwegian drove up the LCC’s stock.

Norwegian Air filed with the Canadian Transportation Agency to possibly start transatlantic flights from this market starting summer 2018, however on April 10 the carrier said it had pushed back plans for a possible Canada launch until at least spring or summer 2019, due to aircraft delivery delays.
