LATAM cabin crew couple gets married onboard by the Pope

SANTIAGO, CHILE — Imagine being married by none other than the Pope. No pressure, right?

LATAM cabin crew managers Carlos Ciuffardi Elorriaga and Paula Podest Ruiz recently accompanied Pope Francis on his flight from Santiago to Iquique. The Holy See is currently on an official visit to Chile and Peru.

The couple, who were married in a civil marriage ceremony back in 2010, had planned a church ceremony as well. But an earthquake that hit southern Chile in March 2010 ended up damaging their wedding venue, forcing them to postpone the marriage.

Nearly eight years later and the couple finally got their wish. While on the papal flight, they approached Pope Francis to simply request a blessing, but the pontiff did one better and offered to perform the marriage ceremony onboard.

“We always wanted to get married in the eyes of the church and it was something that was pending, but we never thought it would be the Pope that would do it. We have received the best possible wedding gift and we are very lucky,” said Ruiz.
