400 Russian flight attendants deemed ‘too old, fat and ugly’ for international flights

TORONTO — Aeroflot has reportedly grounded 400 flight attendants for being too old, fat and ugly.

“They told us all that only the young and thin will fly abroad for Aeroflot,” said flight attendant Yevgenia Magurina in an interview with British tabloid The Sun. Magurina said the flight attendants had been weighed and measured for new uniforms.

Aeroflot released a statement denying the accusations. “These allegations are without foundation – Aeroflot does not discriminate based on age, sex, weight, appearance, religious or political convictions, or indeed any other grounds.”

“We were all photographed en masse and measured — some were even weighed,” said Magurina. “This was done under the pretext of company rebranding and ordering new uniforms for staff.”

With a higher salary and longer stayovers, “only the young and thin” flight attendants are booked to fly abroad, with the rest relegated domestic flights, she said.

“They stopped putting anyone on international flights if they are older than 40 or take more than a (Russian) size 48 (size XL in Canada),” she said.
