Sunwing plane escourted by two F-16 jets back to Toronto

TORONTO – The president of Sunwing Airlines says he is “very happy” with the outcome of an emergency situation onboard a plane from Toronto to Panama City this morning.

Mark Williams says a passenger allegedly threatened the airplane, causing the pilot to turn around about 45 minutes into the flight and NORAD fighter jets to be scrambled.

He says the crew stopped the situation from escalating and kept the passengers calm.

A team of heavily armed police boarded the plane after it returned to Pearson airport around 9 a-m.

NORAD says two of its F-16 fighter jets escorted the plane back to Toronto as a precautionary measure.

Police say they arrested a 25-year-old man after the plane landed.

Ali Shahi (SHAH’-hee) is charged with uttering threats and endangering the safety of an aircraft.

The flight is now scheduled to leave this afternoon.
