No more shreddin’ the gnar: Court upholds snowboarding ban in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — A federal appeals court is refusing to give a group of snowboarders another chance in their fight against a Utah ski resort’s ban on their sport.

Court records show the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals declined to reconsider a ruling that upheld the rule at Alta Ski Area.

The group Wasatch Equality says most of the resort’s slopes are on leased public land, and banning snowboarders is discrimination.

Alta argues they’re a private company and made a legal business decision to be a skiers-only mountain.

A three-judge panel sided with Alta in April. Court documents say none of the 12 appeals judges wanted grant the snowboarders’ request to take another look.

Their lawyer couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Alta is one of the last resorts in the country to prohibit snowboarding.
