TORONTO — Lufthansa will initiate a new route between Munich and Baghdad on Sept. 30. Service will be available four times a week with a Boeing 737 that will be operated on behalf of Lufthansa by the Swiss aviation specialist PrivatAir.

Lufthansa resumed flights to Iraq in April after a 20-year hiatus with service between Frankfurt and the city of Erbil in Northern Iraq.

“Against the backdrop of the economic recovery and as foreign companies establish themselves in the country there is growing demand for flights to Iraq. We are pleased to be offering our customers this convenient nonstop connection from Munich to the Iraqi capital,” said Thomas Klühr, group representative and head of hub management Munich.

Baghdad is the largest city in Iraq, with a population of about nine million. The country has the world’s third-largest proven oil reserves and is experiencing dynamic economic growth, said the carrier.

Key growth areas are the construction sector, the energy and water industries and the healthcare sector.

On board the PrivatAir aircraft, equipped with 24 Business Class and 84 Economy Class seats, passengers will experience all the benefits of Lufthansa’s long-haul product.
