Arizona delegation showcases new product as state gears up for 100th anniversary as state

VANCOUVER — As Arizona heads towards its 100th anniversary of statehood, a delegation arrived here this month to showcase new hotels and product available for snowbirds heading to the area this winter.

The event was held at the newly refurbished and re-opened Rosewood Georgia Hotel in downtown Vancouver.

Of special interest to travel agents is Arizona’s Centennial celebration in February 2012 and many of the areas have created special events around it.

Some of the product and brochures of interest available this winter season include: Flagstaff has created a special Centennial Walk. The Walk is a 100-foot section of the Flagstaff Urban Trails System along the northern edge of the historic train depot property (near the Flagstaff Visitor Center) which has been made into a huge mural depicting 100 years of Flagstaff’s history. Bright Angel Bicycles has also opened and is the first ‘in park’ bike rental at the Grand Canyon. It is the sister company to Around the Bend Adventures and offers packages. San Francisco-based Joie de Vivre Hotels has rebranded and is reopening in fall 2010 the Drinkwater, a 195-room property in Scottsdale. The hotel was formerly known as the Hotel Theodore (and Mondrian Scottsdale).

CopperWynd Resort and Club will reopen its doors Sept. 6 after recently renovating its 34 guestrooms and making other facility improvements. It is located just outside Scottsdale in Fountain Hills. See www.copperwynd.com.

The Hermosa Inn in Scottsdale has added the Blue Door Spa, offering a range of treatments including customized massages, reflexology, shiatsu and deep cleaning facials. See www.hermosainn.com.

Grand Canyon Cavern & Inn is offering what it calls the world’s largest and deepest hotel room 200 feet below the surface in the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon suite is equipped with lamps, a record player and library of books and magazine. The cave suite is devoid of any sound or light. Visit www.gccaverns.com for more info.

The Moenkopi Legacy Inn, the first hotel to be built on Hopi tribal land in 50 years, opened in May and is located at the junction of State Highways 264 & 160 adjoining Tuba City. In June, the new Candlewood Suites of Nogales opened with 88 rooms, with over-sized rooms also featuring kitchenettes with refrigerator, stoves, and kitchen utensils.

The Tombstone home of Virgil Earp, brother of famed Wyatt, has been rebuilt and turned into a bed and breakfast facility. See http://virgilscorner.com.

New in the Chandler area is the 1440 Cable Factory, which began construction this past summer of a clubhouse, bar/restaurant and two lakes with sandy beaches. This is a cable ride over the lake towing eight participants in boarding activities on the water. See www.ridethecable.com. Another activity that will appeal to families with thrill seeking teens is the Xtreme Air Jump ‘N Skate Park, which is also newly-opened and is America’s largest one of a kind indoor park. Always popular in Chandler is the Dec. 3 Tumbleweed Tree Lighting Ceremony which this year has been designated as a Centennial event. A 35-foot Christmas tree is built from 1,500-2,000 pieces of tumbleweed, painted white and decorated with 65 pounds of glitter and 1,200 holiday lights.

The Carefree Resort & Convention Center in Scottsdale has finished a multi-million dollar makeover to facilities and is adding the Sonoran Suites, which is a 60-room complex that can accommodate large groups with varying room configurations including two and three bedrooms adjoining suites. Mesa now has available is 2012 Official Visitors Guide which features a complete listing of golf, dining, attractions, accommodation and shopping as well as maps. Contact the Mesa Convention and Visitors Bureau. A feature in the new guide is on farm visits including the region’s only olive mill and farm. Also featured are kid-friendly events and activities.
