OTTAWA — Global Affairs Canada is reminding Canadians to take severe weather conditions into consideration when planning a trip. Hurricane season begins mid-May and lasts until the end of December and includes not just hurricanes but also typhoons, cyclones and monsoons.
The Travel Advice and Advisories page on Global Affairs Canada informs travellers if their destination is prone to hurricanes. Global Affairs Canada also has a free Travel Smart app, plus its Twitter and Facebook pages all provide updated travel advice on the go.
Here are some tips from Global Affairs Canada that agents can pass on to clients…
- Purchase travel insurance and make sure it covers both trip cancellation or interruption in the event of a hurricane
- Carry emergency contact information for airline or tour operators as well as the Canadian government office nearest to destination of travel
- Leave copies of your travel documents and detailed information on itinerary, tour operation, flights, hotels, cruise ships, telephone numbers and email addresses with family or friends at home
- Be prepared to change travel plans on short notice (and at the traveller’s own cost)
- Stay informed and continually check up on the latest regional weather forecasts, and follow the advice and instructions of local authorities
Global Affairs Canada also reminders Canadians travelling abroad that they should consider signing up for Registration of Canadians Abroad, a free service that allows the Government of Canada to reach travellers in case of an emergency or during a national disaster abroad.
