Lufthansa Group reportedly eyeing 5 euro discount for long-haul direct bookings

FRANKFURT — Lufthansa has posted the best results in its history amid reports that the airline group is furthering its policy of moving bookings away from the GDS channel with a 5 euro discount for passengers booking through direct channels.

Lufthansa Group posted a 12.4 increase in revenues, up to 35.6 billion euros, for 2017. “Our endeavors of the past few years are paying off. Our modernization has a sustainable impact. We have achieved the best result in the history of our company,” said Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board & CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG.

Meanwhile Travel Weekly is reporting that passengers flying on Lufthansa Group airlines will get a 5 euro discount when they book long-haul flights direct via the airlines’ websites and NDC-enabled channels, starting in April 2018. Lufthansa Group’s airlines include Lufthansa, Brussels Airlines, Austrian Airlines and Swiss.

In 2015 Lufthansa Group implemented a 16 euro surcharge on GDS bookings, a move that was widely criticized by travel agent groups. British Airways followed suit in 2017.
